  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the first and only female elected president of the Republic of Liberia. She was elected on December 19, 2005, in the first multi-party elections in the country’s history. The United Nations has recognized her as “a champion of women and girls.” Her presidency was marked by a national goal to achieve gender equality, and a focus on social development, with a strong emphasis on the rights of children and women.

  • Cory Aquino

One of the most prominent women leaders of the Philippines, the former first lady Cory Aquino was a key figure in the People Power Revolution, the ouster of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. Her role in the revolution earned her the title “Mother of Democracy” and the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize, but her husband Ferdinand Marcos was ousted in the aftermath of the revolt, and she was imprisoned. After being released and exiled in the United States, Aquino returned to the Philippines in 1992 and became president in 1998.

In 1968, Smith ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States but withdrew from the race after winning only a handful of votes at the Democratic National Convention.
